Papua New Guinea is frequently impacted by disasters, with communities often bearing the brunt of natural hazards. To strengthen the country’s ability to prepare for and respond to these challenges, the Government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) partnered with IOM, providing vital support through the procurement of emergency equipment and technical assistance to the Enga Provincial Government.
This collaboration represents a significant step toward enhancing disaster resilience and improving the government’s preparedness and response capabilities.
A key element of ROK’s support is the equipping of an emergency operations centre in Enga province. This hub is crucial for coordinating and managing disaster response efforts in Enga Province, especially following the Mulitaka landslide. It consolidates essential personnel and resources to ensure a swift, unified response while enabling real-time decision-making during emergencies.
IOM will equip the emergency operations centre with essential tools, including laptops, internet routers, printers, projectors with screens, and whiteboards. This will improve disaster preparedness and response by enabling faster communication, more efficient information dissemination, and better-coordinated emergency actions. The support will strengthen the government’s capacity to manage disasters, reduce risks, and enhance community resilience.
The ROK’s contribution extends beyond immediate disaster response to focus on long-term preparedness. This initiative not only supports the Mulitaka response but also strengthens Papua New Guinea’s broader capacity for disaster risk management.
IOM continues to collaborate with the National Disaster Centre, Provincial Disaster Centres, and other partners to strengthen disaster management capacities across the country.
