Port Moresby – Elise Varrey, the First Secretary of the French Embassy in Papua New Guinea, recently visited Enga province, reaffirming France’s strong commitment to the ongoing efforts by the Papua New Guinea government and its partners to address the needs of communities affected by the Mulitaka landslide.

The visit was focused on assessing the ongoing response to the catastrophic landslide that struck the province. During her visit, she engaged in meetings with the Enga Provincial Government and partners on the ground. Enga’s Provincial Administrator, Sandis Tsaka, expressed his appreciation for France’s support stating, “We are deeply grateful to the French government for their generous assistance. This crucial aid provides life-saving assistance to the communities affected by the landslide and is a testament to the ongoing support we receive from international partners.”

Elise expressed her deep sympathy for those impacted by the disaster and emphasized France's commitment to supporting the ongoing efforts to better address the needs of the disaster affected population. "France stands in solidarity with the people of Mulitaka during this challenging time," she remarked during her visit to the Yambali Care Centre, which is currently hosting persons displaced by the landslide.

"We are dedicated to contributing to the rebuilding efforts, ensuring that affected communities receive the necessary assistance to restore their livelihoods," she added. “I also want to thank local authorities, Governor Sir Peter Ipatas, and Provincial Administrator, Sandis Tsaka, for their warm welcome.”

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), funded by the French government, is playing a vital role in supporting these communities by providing food rations and hygiene kits. IOM, based on an assessment of the health facility in Mulitaka and in coordination with the Enga Provincial Health Authority, plans to procure essential medical supplies for the Mulitaka Health Center. This initiative aims to enhance healthcare services and support ongoing health-related interventions in the affected areas.

France’s unwavering support highlights its commitment to assisting Papua New Guinea during this challenging period and building a more resilient future for the people of Enga Province.
