Port Moresby – The European Union (EU) has provided much-needed humanitarian assistance to 250 households affected by disaster and displacement in the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea.

The assistance materials, including shelter tools, hygiene kits and kitchen utensils, were distributed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the East Sepik Provincial Disaster Centre. These materials are helping the most vulnerable, including elderly persons, people living with disability, as well as women and children.

The assistance was welcomed by the beneficiary communities who expressed their gratitude to the EU and IOM. “We are thankful for this support. These tools will help many of the villagers to repair the shelters that were damaged by the disasters that hit the province,” said a leader from the Mamar community.  

Singavi Aplo, a widow and elderly woman, welcomed that assistance. “This help will go a long way to improve our welfare,” she highlighted.    

The East Provincial Disaster Coordinator, Derek Warakai, emphasized his staunch support for IOM's work in the province and thanked the EU for their generous funding assistance.

The hygiene kits (comprising of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bath towels, buckets, jerry cans, and sanitary pads) will help the affected populations meet their basic hygiene needs.
