Tears of Relief as Aid Reaches Displacement-Affected Communities in Simbu, Papua New Guinea
Port Moresby – In a significant humanitarian effort, the European Union (EU) has extended critical support to 100 households (approximately 530 people) impacted by disasters in Papua New Guinea’s Simbu province.
This delivery of aid, coordinated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Simbu Provincial Disaster Office, will help to improve the lives of people impacted by floods and landslides that struck the province.
The aid package includes essential items such as shelter tools, kitchen utensils, and hygiene kits. These supplies are crucial for the affected families in starting anew after the devastation caused by natural calamities. The beneficiaries include households from the Kerowagi and Sinesine-Yongomugl districts.
The chief of Bogo Kawa community in Kerowagi district expressed heartfelt gratitude to the EU and IOM. “We lost everything due to the disasters. Seeing the truck arrive with aid brought tears of relief to many, especially the mothers,” he said.
“This is the first time I have received such assistance. I lost my property in the disaster and had nowhere else to turn. Thank you, EU and IOM, for coming directly to our community,” highlighted Arnold Gend, a local community member living with disability.
The Simbu Provincial Disaster Coordinator, Paul Brown expressed gratitude for the support from the EU and IOM. He highlighted that this recent delivery follows significant aid provided earlier by IOM and reaffirmed the Simbu Provincial Disaster Centre’s commitment to collaborating with partners to reach and support the most vulnerable communities in the province.
