Port Moresby – The private sector has once again demonstrated its vital role in humanitarian matters, as evidenced by the recent collaboration between the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and local businesses. Among these, Hardware Haus has stood out for its exceptional support amidst the Mulitaka landslide, providing the
Government of Japan with relief items such as shelter tools to ensure that affected communities could rebuild their homes. The relief item handover ceremony, held on 5 July 2024, highlighted the indispensable partnership between the private sector and humanitarian organizations in addressing crises and aiding recovery efforts. Held at Hardware Haus, Central Waigani in Port Moresby, the event brought together notable dignitaries, including His Excellency Ambassador Nobuyuki Watanabe and delegates from the Embassy of Japan in Papua New Guinea, alongside representatives from the Government of Papua New Guinea, the United Nations and development partners. Hardware Haus' well-equipped and strategically located venue helped facilitate the smooth conduct of the ceremony.
Hardware Haus' contribution, however, extends beyond hosting the event. Its ongoing partnership with IOM has been instrumental in various humanitarian and community projects across the country. By consistently supporting IOM’s initiatives, Hardware Haus has demonstrated a commendable commitment to corporate social responsibility. Specifically, its provision of logistical support and essential resources has enabled IOM to aid at-risk and disaster- affected communities.
In the broader context, the support from private sector partners is a testament to the critical role businesses play in humanitarian operations – be it event hosting, crisis responding or transitioning to recovery phases. The professional, hospitable approach of Hardware Haus' management and staff during the handover event highlighted their dedication to supporting community welfare. This collaboration sets a significant example for other businesses.
As IOM continues assisting those in need, the support from the private sector remains invaluable. It is through the combined efforts of public, private and humanitarian sectors that sustainable solutions can be realized, both in Papua New Guinea and beyond.
